Training Fees

Dear Charnwood AC Members (and parents)

From 1 March, Charnwood AC memberships are due for renewal. In advance of this date, the Club’s management committee has met to discuss and debate any changes to membership fees and also training fees. At our meeting in early January we decided the following:

  • Standard membership fees would remain unchanged at £37 for an individual member

  • Family membership fees for third and subsequent members of the same immediate family would remain at £27

  • Late renewal of membership fees will be subject to an increased rate of £40 from 1 April and £45 from 1 May

  • Training fees would be increased from 1 March 2019 to £3 per member and to £6 for non-members

Below, you will find some frequently asked questions about the training fees.

More information on membership renewals can be found in our:

Please help us to make the renewal process as simple as possible and complete your form and return with payment asap.

Best regards

Andrew Gostelow

Membership Secretary on behalf of Management Committee - Charnwood AC

Q That is quite a change in training fees - how is this increase justified?

A There have been no changes to the training fees for at least the last 8 years. During this time, the costs of hiring the facilities from Loughborough University have risen significantly. Inflation alone over the past 8 years would have made the fees nearly £3.15 (Source Our costs to Loughborough University have risen far in excess of inflation due to costs in maintaining the facilities. The committee have decided that the increase to £3 for members is a balanced response to this situation.

Q Why are you making these changes now?

A Over the past few years the club has been very fortunate to receive a surplus from running the open events. Open entries by all athletes have subsidised the training fees for our members for at least the last 3 years. Changes to the availability of the track this summer means that we will be able to run fewer events and on different nights. We expect this to have an adverse effect on club finances and means we cannot rely on this income to offset training fees.

Q How are you making sure people pay their fair share?

A Last year we introduced changes for members to show their card to prove membership and get the club training rate. This had a positive effect in membership renewals AND ensured that members were not subsidising non-members. The policy of proving membership will therefore continue for the future.

Q There was talk of a contributing member rate - what has happened to that?

A This was a new policy supported widely across the committee and the members we discussed it with. Subsequently, we have received clear advice that such a scheme would constitute a benefit in kind and create a potential tax liability for both the club and members. Due to the complexity and risks involved, the committee has regretfully decided to suspend and not implement the scheme. We are sorry about this and share your frustration that we cannot be creative in encouraging participation.

Q How about more modern ways of managing membership?

A The club is actively looking to simplify the membership process where we can. We are planning to Pilot a way for members to submit an electronic renewal and membership registration form and we are looking at whether membership payments can be made to the club electronically. More will follow on this when available but in the meantime all members are asked to complete the paper form unless specifically asked otherwise.

Q Who should I contact with queries?

A Andrew Gostelow has now taken over the Membership Secretary role from Colin Barnes. Andrew can be contacted at a new membership email address:

The committee thanks Colin for his amazing support of the club since taking on multiple roles over the last few years. We are lucky to retain Colin’s services as a Team Manager, Fixtures Secretary, Coach and Official so no taking it easy just yet!
